Innovative Energy Savings Options on AC | October 11, 2011

From time to time, we highlight our suppliers and sub-contractors in our blog.  Since AC systems are one of the largest users of energy in a home, we recently asked Paul Childers with Blair’s AC to give us his thoughts. 

Here is what he had to say -

There are a number of ways for Tampa home builders to control energy consumption.  When it comes to air conditioning there are a few that stand out.

1. Programmable Thermostats – These devices let you set temperature changes at various days and times.  They take the thought process out of trying to remember to set the thermostat up when you’re away during the day.
2. Variable Speed Technology – This technology allows the inside air handler unit to operate at a range of speeds, which not only makes them quieter, but much more energy efficient.  Operating at lower speeds allows for the control of both temperature and humidity.  Controlling indoor relative humidity often allows the homeowner to find a comfortable set point a few degrees higher than normal because it “feels” cooler with lower humidity.  It’s very similar to being in Arizona when the humidity is low and the temperature is somewhat high…it tends to feel comfortable at a higher temperature.
3. Two Speed Condensers (Outside Units) – Perhaps the single greatest way to impact your electric bill.  In a new Tampa home, a two speed unit will operate 80% of the time at 70% capacity, while providing the same cooling.  Translation:  Let’s say you have a 3 ton unit upstairs and you go with a 3 ton two speed outdoor unit.  When we are not in our peak season which is roughly 9 months of the year, this unit will run at a capacity of 2.1 ton (70% low speed or first stage) versus 3 ton.  Only when there is the additional need for cooling will the unit ramp to give you the additional tonnage needed to cool the space.  This combined with the variable speed air handlers makes for one great system that saves energy and keeps you comfortable year round.
